And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marvelled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
Luke 2:16-18
The gospel is the amazing news of God’s grace.
Luke describes how the shepherds, upon hearing the angels, ran with haste to see the Christ Child, and how enthusiastically they spread the news of His birth and the significance of His coming. Note how everyone “marvelled” when they heard what the shepherds told them.
The Greek word for “marvelled” is thaumazõ which means “to wonder, to be amazed”.
Ask yourself when was the last time you were truly amazed by the gospel? Have you been developing a spiritual appetite to discover more about identity and inheritance in Christ? Or have you become dull of hearing and assume that you have already heard as to what the gospel has to offer?
There is always something fresh in the gospel for you to learn and grow every day. However, we can develop a sense of over-familiarity with the gospel that dilutes our relationship with God. It is like the florist who no longer takes notice of the sweet flowery fragrance in the shop. Or a travel guide who is no longer awed or moved by the beautiful sights and sceneries.
A blasé attitude towards the gospel will hinder your spiritual growth and well-being.
It is wise to maintain a positive learning posture because God gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Don't just be acquainted with the gospel but really know the gospel. There is a huge difference between the two. From a scriptural perspective, to know something involves change and transformation. As such, if we claim to know the revelation of the gospel and not walk in its light, we forfeit ourselves from the good things which God had promised us in Christ (cf. 2 Corinthians 1:20; Ephesians 1:3).
Don't live below "the poverty line" of the gospel of God's grace!
Decide in your heart that you won't compromise the gospel but to take hold of everything that is yours in Christ. When the gospel becomes amazingly real to you, you will experience the constant free flow of God's grace from your life to others.
