If you want to have a personal relationship with God, you must first experience His love before following His will. When you limit your experience of God to how well you know His will, your relationship becomes a performance. All you care about is how well and how faithfully you perform. If all you ever think about is whether or not God is pleased with you, you are no longer thinking like a son or daughter, but rather like an orphan.
God's love is the key to being transformed into a loving person. It makes no difference how much God loves you if you've never felt or valued it. Believers who are unable to fully comprehend God's love often struggle with self-acceptance and feelings of unworthiness. When you dislike yourself, it's only a matter of time before you dislike God and others.
When you rest on God’s love, you will never miss God’s will. Intimacy with God provides the impetus and momentum for you to go all out for Him. You dare to do so because you know His love for you will never fail (1 Corinthians 13:8). Doing God's will does not increase God's love for you. Knowing God's love, on the other hand, will empower you to do more for God through the power and strength of His grace.
You can see this in Jesus. Because He knew He was never out of reach of His Father's love, Jesus was always willing to flow with every changing moment of life. There was not a single instance in which Jesus agonised over "What is God's will for me?" But He declared confidently:
As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you, abide in My love.
John 15:9 (NKJV)
When Jesus realised the magnitude of His Father's love, there was no doubt in His mind that He should do His Father's will. Jesus gives from what He receives from His heavenly Father. Similarly, when you learn to enjoy your Father's love, the desire to do His will arises joyfully and spontaneously.
