For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God, night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect what is lacking in your faith?
1 Thessalonians 3:9-11(NKJV)
The Apostle Paul recognised the significance of building and strengthening God's people's faith. The Thessalonians had obviously been through a lot of sufferings and trials, and as Paul remembers them in his prayers, he was looking for a way to encourage and strengthen what is lacking in their faith.
The Greek word for "perfect" is katartizō which means "to mend what is broken, to equip and put in order". (Strong's G2675) It is like setting right a dislocated joint so that it can resume full function.
Most of us are unlikely to face discrimination or persecution because of our faith, but there are times when our faith is challenged and put to the test. However, do you have someone like Paul who will support you and remember you in prayer when you have those moments of doubt, fear, and frustration?
If you do, good for you!
However, if you don't have anyone to journey with you, it's time to empower someone who can really help fan the flame of your faith. Paul is explicitly clear that while our faith is personal, it is never a private matter. We need community and healthy deep relationships for our spiritual growth and maturity. This is especially crucial when our sense of well-being has been fractured by difficult circumstances or experiences.
In reality, unlike Paul, most believers are hesitant to take the initiative for fear of appearing intrusive or imposing. As a result, most church relationships are superficial and revolve around polite and nice conversations. That, however, should not be the case because we are supposed to help one another in Christ.
