Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
John 5:19 (NKJV)
Isn't it strange that we spend the majority of our lives wondering if we're good enough or special enough for God to use us? The truth is that God does not use us for selfish purposes. Instead, God partners with us to establish and expand His kingdom on earth. We are not fearful slaves cowering under a fearsome and demanding overlord, but faithful sons and daughters carrying on the business of our Righteous Father.
In John 5, the Pharisees accused Jesus of violating the Sabbath by healing a sick man. However, Jesus argued that healing is a rest (relying on God's power) rather than a work (requiring human effort or strength). Jesus was actually keeping the Sabbath because the opportunity and power for Him to heal came not from His own will or might, but from His Father. Jesus exemplifies true sonship by constantly watching what our Father is doing and then working in sync with Him in everything.
When we fully comprehend sonship, as Jesus did, we will faithfully carry out our Father God's perfect plan for our lives. It is not about filling our lives with busy activities or heavy schedules, but about working alongside God.
Everything the Father is doing now (and everything we should be doing) rests on Christ's finished work on the Cross. As such, there is no doubt about what we should do, that is to live out the good news by loving and caring for others in His name.
