The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.
Psalm 14:1-2 (ESV)
In many of his psalms, David decries those who mocked his faith and questioned God’s ability to save him. He refers to them as “fools”, because their stubborn folly runs so deep that they deliberately and defiantly turn against God and speak evil of Him. Their dismal spiritual imprudence would lead not only to their self-destruction but also to the destruction of others. They do not lack the knowledge of God, but they lack the humility and wisdom to pursue the invitation of God to draw near and know Him.
