My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
John 10:27-28 English Standard Version
Some people think that they cannot hear God because they feel they are not worthy enough or good enough. This kind of thinking and attitude comes from underestimating their own capacity to hear from God and be led by His Spirit.
Jesus assures us that we can hear His voice because we are His and we belong to Him. It is really about learning to recognise and respond to His call when He speaks to our hearts through His Holy Spirit. The Bible is full of examples of how God speaks in the everyday life of a believer. God speaks in many different and valid ways. Sometimes He speaks in an audible voice and sometimes He speaks through impressions or even through supernatural dreams and visions.
The voice of God will never contradict the word of God. It only confirms it.
I have come across a number of believers who claim that, "God told me" and then go on to do something that contradicts the Word of God. I call this behaviour "using the G-card" (G meaning God). They are using God to justify their self-seeking and sometimes ungodly choices without admitting they are selfish and manipulative and dishonest.
God will never say something to you through someone else or your own inner voice—that does not line up with what He has already clearly revealed in Scripture. In other words, the more you are acquainted with the Word of God, the more you will develop an authentic ability to hear God and know His voice. If you genuinely long for God to guide you, He will actively speak to you and confirm everything through the amazing words of the Bible.
God is our shepherd and He is looking out for us.
A sheep listens to its shepherd because it recognises the voice that offers comfort, protection and provision. Recognizing the voice of Jesus can change everything. He is always speaking and whether you can hear Him or not, it really boils down to obedience and willingness.
Build a habit of studying Scripture regularly and reflectively. Feed your Spirit man.
Broaden your understanding of each book of the Bible, and hold on to the promises of God. Being grounded in the word of God increases your intimacy with God. It will bring alignment and clarity in every season of life. When you are full of God's Word, you are full of God's Will.
