It's interesting how the four Gospels describe the final week of Jesus' life, culminating in His death on the Cross on Friday, followed by complete silence. There is not a single verse in the Bible that accurately describes what happened on Saturday. I believe it was done on purpose.
In retrospect, we can see that, despite Jesus' tragic death on a Friday, his glorious resurrection on Sunday was just around the corner. However, with the disciples, this was not the case. Despite Jesus' many comforting promises, they were terrified and unsure about what the future held.
Are we not like the disciples? Even though we are aware of God's faithfulness, there are times when we question whether He will continue to be so.
Most believers recognise the significance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. We can connect the two days together. The suffering of "Friday" leads to the victory of "Sunday". Our spiritual journey is like both days in one way. We have witnessed and experienced both "suffering days" and "victorious days." God still speaks to us on "Fridays" and "Sundays". We dislike "Saturdays" the most. "Saturdays" are days of silence in which God's love appears to contradict rather than confirm what we are expected to believe. "Saturdays" are the most difficult days for us to trust God and believe in His faithfulness. Even when nothing is happening, something is happening.
God's silence does not imply that He is absent or uncaring. When we live in a noisy world that draws our attention away from the Lord, silence can be a refreshing change. This was something the disciples had experienced on that particular Saturday. Jesus seems to have forsaken them, and they were terrified and anxious. On Sunday, when He reappeared, His first words to them were, "Peace to you." (Luke 24:36)
Be encouraged if you are presently experiencing a "Silent Saturday" because Jesus is now alive and will remain so forever. Instead of allowing fear or doubt keep you from resting in God’s goodness and His promises, pray for His abundant grace to sustain you and give you the strength to live victoriously.
What is God saying to me here and what must I do?
