Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.

Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

A teachable heart requires great humility to learn and be corrected.

Being ignorant is not a problem, but refusing to learn is costly. Hebrews 5:11-14 warns us of becoming dull of hearing to what the Spirit is saying to us in the Scriptures. This will cause us to stumble and fall away from walking in faith.

If you want to be faithful and fruitful in life, you must adopt a growth mindset and pursue knowledge and understanding. Your growth determines who you are, and ultimately what you will become. Being teachable brings fresh understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus and it may even lead to opportunities and possibilities in which God surprises you with insights you never had before.

We are told that while intellectual (“head”) knowledge can give rise to pride (1 Corinthians 8:1), but an intimate (“heart”) knowledge will lead us to glorify God and love others. This is why the Apostle Paul encourages us to be richly well-versed in God’s Word so that we can encourage one another with what we have learned and understood.

A teachable heart is a blessing because it allows us to become imitators and ministers of Christ. The more we know Christ, the more we want to be like Him. This changes the way we look at life, the way we pray and the way we serve those around us.
