For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

Romans 6:5-7 (NIV)

According to the Apostle Paul, it is through Christ that we experience a spiritual death to sin (Romans 6:2) and to the law (Romans 7:4; Galatians 2:19), as well as a spiritual awakening to new life. Though we were once dead in sin, we have been made alive in Christ. All these blessings or divine advantages are ours through our union and identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.

Sin no longer rules us because we now have God's nature living within us and His Spirit continually works in us to sanctify and transform us into the likeness of Christ. Our old sinful nature was crucified with Christ so that sin’s reign over our bodies is broken and we are no longer slaves to sin.

Even while the Holy Spirit is working through our new nature to resist sin and temptation, we can still slip back into old habits of sin that causes us to act and behave inconsistently with who and what we are in Christ.

If we continue to sin, we are not enjoying the truth of what God has done for us and what He has in store for us through Christ. This allows old and undesirable sinful habits and harmful behaviours to resurface and undermine your freedom in Christ.

You already have freedom in Christ (Galatians 5:1), therefore don't give sin any power. All you must do now is stand firm and renew your mind with the truth about your new identity in Christ. The more we walk in the truth, the more His Spirit empowers us to walk in freedom and overcome every sinful habit.
