Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
Matthew 2:1-2 New King James Version
We know little about the wise men who came seek the Christ child.
Some traditions claimed that they were from Persia or even China. Led by a supernatural star, they journeyed some three years across the desert to Bethlehem to search for Jesus whom they joyfully recognize as the King of the Jews.
Jesus is not just the King of the Jews, but the King of Kings who reigns in majesty over all things for His glory. We can see God's heart for the nations through the story of wise men. God in his grace makes His name known to people of every tribe, nation and tongue so that they may come to worship Him.
As God led the wise men to His Beloved Son, God will lead us and others to Jesus, and like the wise men, our proper response is to worship Him. Worship is more than giving your Sundays to God. Worship involves mission and mission involves worship.
Worship always comes first before mission, and our worship fuels the motivation and momentum of our mission. Mission does not happen when worship is absent. However, when worship finds its foremost place in a church community, mission is the both the acts and means by which we bring others to worship with us. Worship and mission go together. To be a worshipper is to be a missionary. There is no dichotomy between the two. Any idea of separation is disobedience.
When Jesus has His rightful place in your heart, it opens the way to living a life of genuine and surrendered worship. There is joyful abandonment and freedom because we are overwhelmed by the majesty, beauty and splendour of Jesus.
Passionate worship leads to purposeful living. Where there is true worship, there is a clear call to the transformation of nations and lives. Just as we are all called to worship God, we are all called to reveal God's heart to our neighbours across the street and across the world.
Come and worship the King. Take delight to know Him and make Him known.
