From that time, many of Jesus' disciples left him. They did not go with him any longer.
John 6:66 (EASY)
You are aware of the fact that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
2 Timothy 1:15 (NASB)
When someone you have lovingly nurtured and discipled in the faith walks away from you, it is not the end of the story. Rather, it marks the end of their story with you. Instead of blaming yourself or questioning your worth based on their actions, accept that they chose themselves over you and did not cherish the friendship as much as you do. While it is painful to be left without closure, resist resentment, and embrace love. Remain steadfast, humble, and faithful.
Behind the hurt of abandonment and rejection is the spirit of undealt pride. Undealt pride causes the offence to be more painful than the offence itself. When we allow it to hurt us, we may end up hurting others instead of loving them. Staying offended keeps us from growing and maturing in holiness, and in some cases, holds us back from fulfilling our purpose.
Both Jesus and Paul had people who abandoned them when things became tough. But that did not discourage them from continuing to bless others. Let God love others through you. God will not forsake or forget you, but He will reward you when you serve His people well. Though it can be disappointing and frustrating at times, ask God to give you the right spirit and attitude of love and genuine compassion.
