For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)
Nobody is born with low self-esteem. It is a bad habit that we develop when we forget who God created us to be in and through Christ. Low self-esteem often makes us feel unloved and unworthy of love. Such a negative feeling sows the seeds of self-loathing and insecurity, and if left unhealed, it can lead to destructive behaviour.
Low self-esteem is unrelated to our human flaws or weaknesses. After all, everyone has them. Rather, it is seeing ourselves through a distorted tunnel vision that obscures the truth that we are God's perfect workmanship in Christ.
The Greek word for "workmanship" is poiema, which means "poetry, a work of art and a masterpiece". You are God's divine work, supernaturally crafted you in Christ Jesus. This truth will cure you of the curse of low self-esteem.
Low self-esteem lacks the depth of God's perspective.
Gideon nearly let the paralysis of low self-esteem and worthlessness prevent him from fulfilling his destiny. God referred to Gideon as "a mighty man of valour" in Judges 6, even though he was far from it at the time. In doing so, God wanted Gideon to reassess himself in the way God sees him, rather than how he felt about himself.
Without revelation and understanding from God's Word, many of us will continue to think in a way that is unhealthy and often incorrect. A healthy awareness of who God made you in Christ gives you the grace to see past your flaws and weaknesses and discover your true sense of self. Instead of agonising over a crippling sense of low self-esteem, begin to recognise your true worth in God's eyes and apply this revelation to your life's direction and experiences.
