It was about noon, but it turned dark throughout the land until three o’clock in the afternoon, because the sun stopped shining. The curtain in the Temple was torn into two pieces. Jesus shouted, “Father, I put my life in your hands!” After Jesus said this, he died.
Luke 23:44-46 (ERV)
The “Good Friday” originated from “God's Friday”. It is the day when Christians commemorate Jesus’s crucifixion and death on the cross. We remember the suffering that Jesus underwent while being tortured, betrayed, and mocked as well as His atonement for our sin and the sin of the entire world.
Luke gave a dramatic account of the Temple curtain being torn at the moment of Jesus' death, implying that His ultimate sacrifice has victoriously delivered us from sin and eternal separation from God for all time.
The Cross is God’s declaration of love to us. Because Jesus did such a perfect work that the Holy Spirit now witnesses to us: “I will forget their sins and never again remember the evil they have done.” (Hebrews 10:17) What a wonderful assurance that because Jesus bore the punishment for our sins on the cross, God no longer punishes us for our transgressions. This gives us a good reason to be joyful as we rest in Him and surrender ourselves to Him.
Our hearts will be so full of love for God when we realise salvation is such a wonderful gift of grace that we won't want to sin against him. Even though we still occasionally sin and make poor choices, the wonderful thing is that we no longer enjoy sinning because we have been transformed from within. The "new life" has replaced the "old life" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Despite the fact that you are saved, do not grow weary of hearing the gospel. But rather keep your eyes on Jesus and continue to follow Him. Make every day a fresh start in your pursuit of holiness and deeper love.
