Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
1 Corinthians 1:26-30 (NIV)
God is not afraid of your weaknesses.
Never assume that because of your past or because you lack the necessary skill or ability God cannot use you or call you. The Apostle Paul says that it is because of our weakness, not because of our strength, that God has chosen us to reveal the mystery of the gospel.
No one wants to feel weak, but in God's hands, our weakness is strength.
Many times, we believe that God only works with people of significant status and power.
The kingdom of God, however, is counterculture and goes against the current. The Bible is full of stories of God using ordinary people in extraordinary ways. God, after all, bestows grace on the lowly and humble so that His glory can be magnified in and through them. If we ever fall short of loving and serving God, it won't be for lack of ability; rather, it will be for lack of humility.
We must never underestimate the power of God within us. A feeble faith in an all-powerful God will produce much more and better fruit than being gifted without humility. When Christ calls us to follow Him, He is able to provide for all of our needs.
Think about Peter and Paul. Paul, who was brought up in a strict kosher and Jewish environment, was not permitted to associate with people or food that might be ritually impure. Still, Jesus called Paul in his weakness to reach the Gentiles. Peter, on the other hand, was called to reach the Jews despite not having a strong background in the law or Jewish tradition.
The lesson we must learn is that God never let our personality traits, cultural preferences, or even dislike for specific individuals stand in the way of His purpose. It is about having the necessary amount of humility to obey and build the kingdom with God.
