The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, pedaling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply.

Matthew 6:7-8, (Message)

We do not gain more power through prayer.

Instead, prayer connects us to God who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. This power flows from the amazing grace of Christ, which is made perfect in our weakness.

Isn't it wonderful to know that God will hear our prayers even if they appear imperfect to us? Jesus assures us that we have a perfect Father God who is aware of every prayer desire of our hearts. This understanding of God's unfailing love gives us the confidence and freedom to pray for anything. Even if God doesn't always answer our prayers in the way we prefer, we can have faith that He will still work out everything for our good and His glory.

Don't just pray when you're in need or make promises to do something when God “comes through" for you. Then prayer will no longer be a relationship but a transaction. We pray because we know God loves us and He will do everything according to His purpose. There is no better reason to pray than the fact that you are a beloved child of God. The good news is that Jesus tells us our heavenly Father is more aware of our needs than we are. In other words, Jesus wants our prayer life to be “easy and light” and to bring rest to our souls.

Praying with simplicity and authenticity is a blessing from God.

We sometimes make prayer more difficult than it needs to be. It is better to use fewer words and to stop trying to sound more intelligent than God. One straightforward prayer that is said with a heightened awareness of the Father's love has a greater impact than you might think possible.

If you don’t have a habit of praying on a regular basis, you can take a cue from Jesus’ disciples and ask "Lord, teach us to pray." Our Lord will help you by guiding you to have sincere and intimate conversations with the Father. These prayerful conversations with God will help you gain wisdom and clarity, as well as the ability to see beyond your current circumstances. What you find out might surprise you. Your ability in in demonstrating your authority and power in Christ flows from your understanding of these gospel truths.
