For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God, night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect what is lacking in your faith?

1 Thessalonians 3:9-11(NKJV)

The Apostle Paul understood the importance of building and strengthening the faith of God's people. The Thessalonians had clearly experienced many hardships and trials, and as Paul remembers them in his prayers, he was looking for a way to encourage and strengthen what was lacking in their faith.

The Greek word for "perfect" is katartizō which means "to mend what is broken, to equip and put in order". (Strong's G2675) It is like setting right a dislocated joint so that it can resume full function.

Most of us are unlikely to face discrimination or persecution because of our faith, but there are times when it is challenged and tested. However, do you have someone like Paul who will encourage you and remember you in prayer when you are feeling doubt, fear, or frustration?

If you do, good for you!

However, if you do not have anyone to journey with you, it is time to empower someone who can truly fan the flame of your faith. Paul makes it clear that, while our faith is personal, it is never private. We require community and healthy deep relationships for spiritual growth and maturity. This is especially important when our sense of well-being has been harmed by adverse circumstances or experiences.

In contrast to Paul, most believers are hesitant to take the initiative for fear of appearing intrusive or imposing. As a result, most church relationships are superficial, centred on polite and pleasant conversations. That, however, should not be the case, as we are supposed to help one another in Christ.

If you believe that someone would benefit from your assistance or support, do not be afraid to offer it. Make it about the other person, not you. You will never progress in any relationship if you do. Trust God for the moments when you can truly reach out to someone and demonstrate how much you care.
