God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:19 (NKJV)
The cross powerfully reveals God's perfect love for us.
God knew that sin separates us from Him and that the result of this terrible separation is death. But God also understood that we could not conquer sin on our own, which is why God sent Jesus to save us from our sins.
All of God’s demands of you for your salvation have been met entirely through Christ. You are totally reconciled and restored to a right relationship with God because Jesus finished the work assigned to Him by the Father. This brings you peace with God because you know you are fully loved and favourably accepted by the Father.
The truth is that the cross is the reconciling place where God's holiness and justice meet God's grace and mercy. It is God who is reconciling you to Himself, and all you have to do is rest on Christ's finished work for your salvation.
True reconciliation is impossible if sin is still imputed on you.
One of the positive effects of being reconciled to God is that there is no more imputation of sin because Jesus paid in full and proclaimed, "It is finished". (John 19:30) To impute is to give someone credit or charge them for what they did. You have no outstanding debt owing to God. And if God still needs to impute sin on you after what Jesus did on the cross and say you are still guilty of sin in some way, it shows God wasn't sincere or truthful about forgiving your debt of sin in the first place.
Whenever you are defeated by sinful habits and troubled by thoughts of condemnation or guilt, don't lose faith in God's loving and forgiving nature. Instead, focus on His grace to overcome temptation and live victoriously.
