The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
Luke 4:19 (ESV)
People were ecstatic when Jesus publicly announced God's forgiveness and love for them. This was because Jesus set His message and ministry in the context of the Jubilee year.
Jubilee was a time of debt forgiveness and freedom from slavery in the Old Testament. It was a time when a debtor was released from any personal obligation of a debt and was free to go. However, a Jubilee only occurs every fifty years, and if someone is unable to pay off his or her debt, he or she is forced to remain a debt slave until the next Jubilee.
But what if the Jubilee does not occur for another thirty to forty years?
This means that the person will be either very old or dead by that time. However, if the debtor has a "kinsman redeemer," that is, a male family member who chooses to settle the debt (without any required repayment), that person can immediately enjoy his or her "Jubilee rest" without having to wait for the actual Jubilee.
Jesus is our kinsman redeemer.
You don't have to suffer a moment longer, believing you can earn your salvation by atoning for your sins (which is never possible). Through His finished work on the Cross, Jesus has already paid your sin debt. In doing so, Jesus wants you to recover all, to take back what the devil has robbed from you and to reap the full benefits and blessings of His sacrifice.
There is no time limit on how long you can enjoy your Jubilee rest in Christ.
The Old Covenant Jubilee lasted only a year, but the New Covenant Jubilee lasts forever. This is due to the fact that our Lord paid such a great price for your sin debt that you are now eternally free of it. His blood has permanently erased the record of the penalty of your sin. Furthermore, sin no longer has the power to enslave you because you are free from its grip if you continue to trust Christ. Then, healing and deliverance, as well as restoration and reconciliation, are possible because there is nothing to impede you from believing and receiving from the Lord.
