We have therefore been buried with Him through baptism into death so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory and power of the Father, we too might walk habitually in newness of life [abandoning our old ways].”

Romans 6:4 (AMP)

Knowing your identity in Christ sets you free from looking for love in the wrong places and approval from the wrong people.

Our identity in Christ is attached to how much we have been forgiven and loved by God. Jesus did not weigh our worthiness or evaluate our faithfulness before He unconditionally laid down His life for us. He takes joy in saving us (Hebrews 12:2) and giving us eternal life because He loves us more than we can fathom.

When we rest in the truth of our identity (who we are) and inheritance (what we have) in Christ, we can confidently enjoy the blessings and benefits of our salvation. We don't have to strive or work for what God has already so freely and fully provided for us. Indeed, Jesus opened and paved the way for us to have a strong, secure and healthy relationship with God.

Understanding our identity in Christ can be difficult at times. We somehow allow our past or present sinful habits to cast doubt on our salvation or the truth of God's love for us. God does not define us by our mistakes or darkest moments because He has made us new creations in Christ. God sees us as He sees Christ because we are united and hidden in Christ.

Our sin does not separate us from God, and the way God deals with our sinful habits and behaviour is to give His Spirit of holiness to dwell within us (1 Corinthians 1:30).

As we develop the habit of walking in the Spirit, God will empower us by His grace to overcome every temptation we will ever face. By putting on Christ we make no excuses and give no reasons to satisfy our sinful desires (Romans 13:14).

Despite your feeling of doubts, failures and disappointments, never lose sight of the truth that you are a beloved child of God, and that Jesus is the source and power of your identity. Rest on the revelation of the gospel of grace and you will discover contentment, confidence, freedom, and peace.
